Podocarpus atjehensis

Type: Indonesia, Sumatra, Aceh, Gunung Kemiri, 1937, C.G.G.J. van Steenis 9614 (holo BO, iso L) (de Laubenfels 2015).

Trees, 8-15 m tall and about 20 cm diameter. Foliage buds 6-14 mm long. Adult leaves linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, 7-11 cm × 6-8 mm, narrowly acute, narrowing somewhat gradually at the base to a 3-4 mm petiole, cuticle thick, sometimes with lateral vascular resin canals distinctly larger than the median canal, midrib above a prominent ridge with nearly vertical sides, 0.2-0.3 mm wide, 0.2 mm high. Pollen cones 3.5 cm, sessile, solitary; apex of the microsporophyll a small triangular spur c. 0.2 mm long. Seed-bearing structure on a 8-16 mm peduncle; foliola 2-4 mm long; receptacle 10-11 mm long, formed of two unequal bracts, becoming red when mature. Seed with its covering, including a blunt apex, 9-11 × 7-8 mm (de Laubenfels 1988).
This forest tree has two reported occurences, highly disjunct: in NW Sumatra (Gajo Lands: Kemiri and Bandahara Mountains, 2500-3300 m elev.) and in western New Guinea (Wissel Lakes, 1800 m elev.) (de Laubenfels 1988). The IUCN reports that the population status is declining.

The epithet refers to Atjeh, now called Aceh, site of the type locality.
