Larix gmelinii var. olgensis
Synonymy (Farjon 1990):
Tree to 30 m tall and 80 cm dbh. In coastal areas, it usually has a twisted trunk and deformed crown. Young shoots are reddish-brown, covered with dense reddish dawn. Leaves to 3 cm long. Cones to 3 cm long, on short shoots with leaves. Each cone has up to 50 scales. Seed scales rounded, velvety. Pollination in April-May, seeds mature in August-October (Harkevich and Kachura 1981).
Russia, China and North Korea. Locally common in coastal Ussuriland (Ol'ga Bay NE of Vladivostok is type loc.); rare and local inland. Found at a few locations in China (Jilin and E Liaoning) and North Korea (Farjon 1990, Harkevich and Kachura 1981); also found at up to 1000 m in the Sikhote-AlinMountains, Ussuriland (Vladimir Dinets e-mail 1998.01.02). Listed as rare in Russia.
The largest specimens are said to be on Oblachnaya Mt., in Ussuri River headwaters (Harkevich and Kachura 1981).
Easy to see along the coastal highway to Terney within Sikhote-Alinsky Zapovednik (Harkevich and Kachura 1981).
