Taxonomic notes

There is some debate whether this taxon is synonymous with Ephedra distachya, which differs in having orange to yellow female cones (Takhtajan and Pachomova 1967, as cited by Kakiuchi et al. 2011). It is maintained as a species by Govaerts (2010) but is not recognized by the IUCN.

Transcaucasus to Central Asia: Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan (Plants of the World Online 2021).

The IUCN has not assigned a conservation status to this species.
