Salmon, J.T. 1996. The Native Trees of New Zealand (3rd ed.). Auckland: Reed Books. ISBN=0-7900-0503-4.
Profusely illustrated with fine color photographs, this is the definitive text for identification and also provides a wealth of natural history information. Supplemental chapters address ecosystem structure, energetics, morphology, reproduction, classification of New Zealand forest types, paleobotany, and conservation. Highly recommended (except for the chapter on "Growth, Age and Longevity," which has a number of errors).
