Podocarpus neglectus

Blume 1847

Common names

None have been reported, but since the species looks very similar to Podocarpus neriifolius, it likely has the same common names as that species where they co-occur.

Taxonomic notes

Type: Indonesia, Java, C.L. von Blume s.n. (holo L, iso B, BO) (de Laubenfels 2015). Unfortunately de Laubenfels's citation is ambiguous and might apply to any of three collections at L, all made in Java and marked "Podocarpus neglecta" on the original herbarium label, but the only one that gives no further location information than "Java" is specimen L.1190725 (accessed 2023.01.23). The other two collections include L.1190704 and L.1190715.

Synonymy (de Laubenfels 2015):

For most of the time since this species was described by Blume, it has been synonymized with Podocarpus neriifolius, as have the other synonyms given here. Only 6 collections are inventoried at GBIF (accessed 2023.02.09). This species has not been evaluated using molecular methods. See P. neriifolius for taxonomic notes on the 17 species in the P. neriifolius complex.

Description

Trees to 8 m tall. Crown, bark, twigs not described. Foliage buds 3-4 mm diameter, with erect triangular scales 3 mm long, and often with 1-2 outcurved lateral scales to 5 mm long. Leaves on 3 mm petioles, lenticular, on mature trees 50-70 × 8-9 mm, juvenile and shade foliage to 90 × 12 mm; apex acute. Upper (adaxial) midribs "sharply raised"", 0.5 mm wide; lower midribs not described. Pollen cones sessile in groups of 1-3, 25 × 2 mm. Seed cones on 12-14 mm peduncles, subtended by 2 foliola 1.5 mm long, receptacles 6-8 mm long, fleshy and red when ripe; seed within epimatium 7 × 5 mm (de Laubenfels 2015).

De Laubenfels (2015) states the species is distinct from Podocarpus neriifolius due to lenticular leaves that are considerably smaller and not widest near the base, narrow upper midribs ca. 0.5 mm wide, and smaller seeds.

Distribution and Ecology

China: Hainan; Indonesia: Borneo, Java Barat, Java Timur, Java, Kalimantan Timur, Sumatra, Sumatra Utara; Malaysia: Johore, Sabah, Selangor; Philippines: Palawan, Quezon; Thailand: Nakhon Si Thammarat; Viet Nam: Kon Tum. Occurs from low elevations to 1850 m elevation (de Laubenfels 2015). Blume (1847) described it as occurring at 4000-6000 feet elevation (1220-1830 m) in the mountains of western Java, which may be taken as the type location.

The IUCN has not evaluated this species with regard to conservation status. Given its very wide distribution, it would likely not be assessed as at significant risk.

Remarkable Specimens

No data as of 2023.01.23.

Ethnobotany

No recorded uses as of 2023.01.23, but since the species looks very similar to Podocarpus neriifolius, it likely has the same uses as that species where they co-occur.

Observations

See the collection locales referred to by de Laubenfels (2015).

Remarks

The epithet neglectus likely derives from the species being so often overlooked, synonymized with the similar and extremely widespread Podocarpus neriifolius.
